The history of Nike
In 1962, having just graduated in economics, Phil Knight asked his father to borrow fifty dollars to found his company with the idea of importing cheap but quality sneakers from Japan and selling them to athletes on sports fields. His scouting took him to Kobe, Japan, where he found Onitsuka Co (now Asics), manufacturer of Tiger, a quality, low-cost shoe, and obtained the rights for distribution in the Western United States. It will take a year to obtain the first supply of shoes which will lead to the establishment of the Blue Ribbons sports company which will become Nike. Phil starts selling his shoes at sports fields. His shop consists of the trunk of his car, the warehouse is the garage at home and his commercial leverage is only his enthusiasm.
In his biography Phil focuses a lot on the enormous risks he faced during the growth of the company, the economic problems that led him to work as an accountant for long periods, the humiliations, the unscrupulous competitors and the many times he failed to obtain a loan from banks.
In the book there is no space for personal triumphs but only for those of the people who contributed to Nike's success. With honesty Phil talks about the coincidence of choosing the name "Nike" at the suggestion of the first employee hired in the company Jeff Jones (who was actually based on the Greek goddess of Victory) and how the Nike swoosh was commissioned from a graphic design student design, or the bet on the first testimonials, John McEnroe and Michael Jordan . Phil's passion and his great ability to choose and develop his collaborators created the Nike legend.
Nike today
Today Nike's turnover exceeds thirty billion dollars a year and demonstrates that success is accessible to anyone with the courage to seek it and the determination to never give up. Phil tells us that success is not a point of arrival , but a path along which we learn valuable lessons and develop skills that enable us to face any challenge . It is an invitation to overcome our limits and push ourselves beyond our comfort zones.
Quoting one of the phrases from Phil's biography “ let others call your idea crazy…you continue on your way. Do not stop. Don't even think about stopping until you get there, and don't worry about where "there" is. Whatever happens, don't stop ."
From sneakers, over the years, the Nike product range has significantly expanded and now covers all sports and leisure clothing , the most disparate accessories, such as bags, backpacks up to watch straps and main sports equipment.
And the sunglasses certainly couldn't be missing which, with their captivating and bold design, stimulate those who wear them to face everyday challenges.
